Spirit Stumble In Second Half Opener

July 15, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

The second half of the season didn't get off to a great start for the North Shore Spirit as they fell to the Brockton Rox 11-6 on Friday night at Fraser Field.

It was an uncharacteristic performance for Spirit starter John Kelly as he gave up eight runs in 61/3 innings of work to pick up just his third loss of the season. Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd earned his second victory of the season in his return to Fraser Field.

Kelly struggled early, as Brockton grabbed four runs in the first inning. Matt Cucurullo led off the game with a solo home run to get the Rox on the board. After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, Kelly walked home the Rox second run. Designated hitter Kris Zacuto then put two more on the board with a two run single up the middle.

North Shore finally got to Oil Can with a three-run in the third inning. Yuri Sanchez got things started when he singled and advanced to second on a throwing error from the left fielder. Agramonte knocked him home and then hustled into second for the double. Rob Fischer followed that with a two-run homer and the Spirit were within one.

The Rox, however, added two more runs in the sixth inning. Kelly allowed three straight singles, with Zacuto picking up his third RBI of the game. Daubert followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Rox a 6-3 lead.

Craig Lewis put the Rox ahead by four with an RBI single to shortstop in the seventh, chasing Kelly from the game. Jarred Sues came in with runners on first and third and one out. He got Brian Jones on a groundout to second base, but the run scored from third. Sues got the next batter on fly ball to right for the inning's final out.

North Shore got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brian Macchi got things started with a solo home run off of Boyd. That was it for Boyd, as Eddie Aucoin entered the game in relief. Aucoin gave up a double to Eric Storey and an RBI triple to Garrett Weir. Weir scored on a single from Sanchez to put North Shore back within two runs.

Brockton answered with another run of its own in the eighth inning. After Jake Daubert singled and reached second on a throwing error from Storey, Andrew Salvo sent him home with an RBI single.

The Rox put the game out of reach with two more in the ninth inning. Jones and Guye Senjem each picked up an RBI in the inning.

North Shore and Brockton resume the series tomorrow night at 5:05 at the New Fraser Field.
