
Spirit Steal Another from the Capitales

Rob Fischer capped a furious comeback with an eighth-inning triple to give the Spirit a 6-5 win over Quebec before one of the largest crowds at the New Fraser Field this season.
The Spirit (17-9) had 3,349 take advantage of the Saturday afternoon game, despite the oppressive heat, and the fans were rewarded with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Capitales (14-11).
Chris Farley pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his first victory of the season. Marcus Janzen went the distance for the Capitales and suffered just his second loss. Alex Herrera pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, to earn his seventh save.
The Spirit rally was really the story in this game. Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the eight inning, the Spirit rallied for three runs on three hits to take their first lead of the ballgame. Fischer keyed the Spirit comeback with his triple, but the rest of the lineup did their part as well.
With one out in the inning, Andy Howdeshell singled, and moved to second after a walk to Marcos Agramonte. After Yuri Sanchez was retired on a fly-ball out; Garrett Weir scored Howdeshell on an RBI single. Rob Fisher came to the plate with two on and two out. He appeared to hit the final out of the inning, but Quebec third baseman Eddie Lantigua couldn't make the play on the pop fly. Fischer took advantage of the second life, and laced a two-run triple to center. Buck McNabb dove to prevent the ball from dropping, but he couldn't make the play, and Fischer ended up on third base with the game-winning hit.
Both teams struggled to get anything going early in this game. The game remained scoreless through the first three innings. Quebec finally broke the deadlock with a single fourth-inning run. After Geoff Tomlinson drew a two-out walk, Eddie Lantigua sent him home with an RBI double.
North Shore evened the score in the fifth inning with their first run of the game. Garrett Weir led things off with a single, and moved over to second on a wild pitch. After the next two batters failed to bring him across the plate, Travis Oglesby laced an RBI single to tie the game.
The tie didn't last long, however, as Quebec pounded out four runs in the sixth inning. Benoit Emond drew a one-out walk, and Dany Scalabrini followed with a single. Both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, and after a pop out from Tomlinson, the Spirit intentionally walked Lantigua to load the bases. Buck McNabb made the Spirit pay with a three-run triple. Olivier Lepine delivered another key two-out hit, scoring McNabb with the Capitales fourth run of the inning.
The Spirit got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Brian Macchi got thing stated with a double, and moved to third on a single from Marcos Agramonte. Yuri Sanchez sent him home with a sacrifice fly to the left fielder with the second Spirit run.
The Spirit got one more run in the seventh with Weir and Vic Davilla teaming up for the score. Weir got thing started with a double, and scored on an RBI single from Davilla.
The Spirit offense may have gotten off to a slow start in this one, but it was a good day at the plate for Weir. He finished the game 4-5 with an RBI.
Weir and the Spirit will be going for a sweep of the Capitales when series resumes tomorrow afternoon at Fraser Field. Game time is 5:05 with Ryan Bicondoa taking the mound for the Spirit.
