New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters showed no compassion for any and all pitchers sent to the mound by the Elmira Pioneers on Saturday night, as they belted out 17 hits en route to 14-5 victory. The game was destined to be a drubbing right from the beginning as the Cutters captured a first inning lead for the second game in a row and continually built on that all night. They failed to score in only two innings.

Designated hitter Jeff Brooks was one of many offensive stars for the Cutters. He launched two home runs on the night, his seventh and eighth of the season and drove in five runs. Derrick Gibson added a long ball of his own, his 11th.

The game was blown open in the second inning when third baseman Junior Zamora ripped a triple into the left centerfield gap with the bases loaded for three ribbies. It was the second time he had come to bat with the bases loaded and, after failing to deliver in the first inning, he came through to give his team a 7-0 advantage. Pioneers starter Ryan Dittfurth was finally chased from the game in the bottom of the forth after Gibson's home run and a Bill Peavey single. A walk in his first at bat extended Peavey?s consecutive on-base streak to 41 games.

Zamora also extended a streak of his own on Saturday night, hitting safely for the 14th time in 14 games with the Cutters.

Cutters starter Tim Keinath hit one large roadblock in an otherwise sharp outing. He was touched up for five runs in the top of the fourth, struggling with the location of his pitches. Onyx Mercado had a triple of his own for the Pioneers that plated two runners. But Keinath would eventually retire the side and settle down to pitch a scoreless two and one third innings before giving way to the bullpen.

A new face in the Cutters relief corps made his debut during the game. Adam Nikolic, a southpaw reliever, pitched a scoreless eighth inning. He was added to the roster prior to the game. Infield/outfielder Carlos Brackley was released to make room for Nikolic.

The first place Cutters go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. With two straight wins over the Pioneers coupled with a Worcester loss on Saturday, the Cutters now hold a four-game lead in the South Division. As always, it is "Kids Eat Free" at Sunday?s game. Also 500 kids ID kits will be given away courtesy of United Shoreline Credit Union. Courtney Hall (4-3) pitches for the Cutters, while Rolando Viera (2-0) takes the mound for Elmira.
