
Spirit Start Weekend With 3-2 Win Over Rival Hounds

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 3-2 Thursday night at The Dow Event Center. Spirit Forward Vincent Trocheck earned the games first star honors with a goal and an assist while goaltender Edward Pasquale earned the second star honors with 30 saves on 32 shots. The win moves Saginaw's record to 17-13-3-0 for 37 points on the season.
Both teams guarded their nets closely in the first, ending the period with the score tied 0-0. It was the Spirit the broke though first however, with winger Josh Shalla finding the net with a power play goal at 19:40 in the second. Wingers Jordan Skellett and Barry Sanderson earned the assists on the goal, which saw the period end with Saginaw leading 1-0.
The Spirit extended their lead in the third when winger Joe Pleckaitis tallied a goal at the 3:46 mark, courtesy an assist from center Vincent Trocheck. The Greyhounds responded in the later part of the period however, when defenseman Dylan King notched a goal at 11:35 off of assists from winger Jordan Carroll and defenseman Jacob Muzzin (NHL PITTSBURGH PENGUINS). Saginaw was quick to answer, with center Vincent Trocheck posting a goal at 15:22 that saw an assists by winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL PHEONIX COYOTES). Sault Ste. Marie tallied their second goal of the game at 18:07 when winger Vern Cooper found the net to move the score to reduce the deficit to a single score. Assists were credited to center Brett Thompson and defenseman Jacob Muzzin. The Spirit stymied the Hounds offense for the remainder of the period however, sealing the 3-2 victory in regulation.
Spirit goaltender Edward Pasquale (NHL ATLANTA THRASHERS) posted 30 saves on 32 shots while Greyhound netminder Bryce O'Hagan had 21 saves on 24 attempts.
