Spirit Shine Over Berkshire

The North Shore Spirit defeated the Berkshire Black Bears 6-2 Friday night at the New Fraser Field in Lynn, MA.

Klae Calvert (7-5) pitched seven solid innings for the win, giving up five hits and two runs. Calvert finished with ten strikeouts and stuck out the side in the fourth. Courtney Hall (2-11) picked up the loss for Berkshire allowing five hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

The Spirit jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hall walked centerfielder John Schmitz and Carlos Sepulveda doubled to advance Schmitz to third. Frank Charles picked up the RBI with a ground out to the shortstop.

The Spirit put two more runs on the board in the second inning after an Eddie Muth walk and singles by Fran Riordan and Yuri Sanchez. Riordan touched home on a Marcos Agramonte fielder's choice bringing the score to 3-0. Sanchez was 2-3 for the night with an RBI and a run scored.

The Black Bears scored the first of their two runs in the third inning off back-to-back doubles by Jose Mateo and P.J. Johnston. They scored their second run in the seventh on a Ryan Jones solo homerun.

The Spirit added an insurance run in the sixth inning after an Eddie Muth solo homerun, his fifth of the season, and two more runs in the seventh. The Spirit had eight hits to fuel the attack against the Black Bears.

Spirit ace John Kelly (11-2) will take the mound for the Spirit on Saturday and will face Berkshire's Tony Harden (8-4). The Spirit remain a half game out of first place behind Les Capitales de Quebec for the second half of the season.

The Spirit play game three against the Berkshire Black Bears on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the New Fraser Field. Saturday is Hawaiian Night at the ballpark. In accordance with the North Shore Spirit dress code, Hawaiian shirts are a must! In addition, the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a complimentary lei. So break out your grass skirts, leis and pineapples because Fraser Field will be the next-best place to Hawaii on August 23!
