Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors wasted a strong complete game performance from John Dillinger and lost 1-0 to Quebec les Capitales Friday night in Allentown.

Dillinger scattered ten hits over his nine innings, walking one and striking out six. The lone run came in the seventh inning, when he walked Rafael Pujols to begin the inning, then gave up a single to Pappy Ndungidi. He got a ground ball, but it was hit too slowly and the Ambassadors only recorded an out at second off the bat of Asdrubal Oropeza. With runners at the corners and one out, Dillinger got another slow ground ball from pinch hitter Galindo Gomez, and again, the Ambassadors could only get the one out at second, with Pujols scoring.

Rodney Allen pitched six innings for Quebec before leaving after giving up a lead-off double to Greg Schmidt and walking Jorge Diaz in the seventh. Brad Foss came in and Garrett Larkin could not get a bunt down to move the runners over and eventually struck out. Then Brian Macchi hit a blooper into shallow left field that left fielder John Ballon mis-read and did not get to in time. But Schmidt had to stay close to second base in case Ballon caught it and was an easy out at third. Marlon Roche then popped out to end the inning.

The Ambassadors had another good chance in the eighth. With runners at first and second and two outs, Schmidt hit a deep drive to right center field that right fielder Steve Booker made a great running catch on the warning track to save two runs from scoring.

Allen got the win and is now 7-6. Dillinger set a new Northeast League record for complete games in a season with 9, but got the loss. He is now 6-8. Julien Tucker got Schmidt out in the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth for the save, his third. The win puts Quebec at 22-14 while the Ambassadors fall to 14-24 with the loss. The two teams play the final game of the series and the final home game for the Ambassadors this season tomorrow night. Chris Kelly will pitch for the Ambassadors, he'll face Jordy Alexander.
