Spirit make it eight straight, 2-0
August 27, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
Even a rain storm couldn't extinguish the red-hot Spirit, as North Shore rallied behind a spectacular starting performance from Matt Bishop to defeat the Tornadoes 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Fraser Field for their eighth straight victory.
The soggy skies didn't put a damper on a dominant outing from Bishop (5-1). The Spirit righty pitched eight innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. The Tornadoes never threatened in the contest, as Bishop kept them at bay with his masterful performance.
Kevin Fitzgerald took over for Bishop in the ninth inning and picked up the game's final three outs for the save. Fitzgerald's 22nd save of 2006 gave him the single-season saves record for both the Spirit and the CanAm League.
While the pitchers were the story in this game, the Spirit offense did their job pushing two runs across the plate.
The Spirit grabbed the lead in bottom of the fourth. Luis Sabino led off with a ringing triple to the gap in left center and scored two batters later on a balk.
North Shore would tack on another run in the fifth. After a Jeff Brooks single, Antoin Gray laced an RBI double to the wall in right, giving the Spirit a 2-0 lead.
The Spirit and the Tornadoes will conclude their four-game set tomorrow night at 7:05. The Spirit will be looking to complete the series sweep in the final 2006 regular-season contest at Fraser Field. Sam Smith will be making his debut on the Spirit mound, while the Tornadoes will counter with Alex Pena.
