North Shore Spirit News Release
Lynn, MA â In the final game of the first half of the 2004 season, the North Shore Spirit fell to Les Capitales de Quebec 4-2. This was the second straight game on the road that the Spirit went into extra innings.
In a classic pitcher's duel, John Kelly was outstanding on the mound. Kelly had a no-hitter through four innings (facing the minimum) with seven strikeouts and finished with twelve strikeouts for the outing. Keith Dunn pitched seven innings for Quebec giving up nine hits, two runs and striking out three. Alex Santos (1-0) got the win for Quebec.
North Shore jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Joe Hastings blasted a solo homerun, his 5th of the season, to collect his 29th RBI. Eddie Lantigua had Quebec's first hit in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to brush up Kelly.
The Spirit tacked on another run in the sixth inning after back-to-back singles by Mike Granger and Vic Davilla, putting Granger in scoring position. Rob Fischer singled to leftfield for an RBI, his 19th of the season.
Justin Wendt singled for Quebec in the eighth and Sam Bozanich was Kelly's final strikeout victim (12) before Gary Bell came in for relief. Olivier Lepine walked, sending Wendt to second and Benoit Edmond singled to leftfield to load the bases. Lee Delfino reached on an error by shortstop Yuri Sanchez to score Wendt (unearned), putting Quebec on the board.
The Spirit had a chance in the ninth when Marcos Agramonte doubled to centerfield, but Agramonte was stranded on base. Quebec refused to give up and tied the game at 2 in the ninth. Eddie Lantigua doubled down the leftfield line and scored on a single by Tyson Boston.
The game remained tied at 2 until the eleventh inning. Miguel Marichal picked up the loss after walking Buck McNabb and giving up a two-run homer to Shane Hopper.
The playoff-bound Spirit have successfully completed the first half of the 2004 season, finishing in first place for the second year in a row. The Spirit return home on Friday for a three-game, weekend series against the Aces. Let's welcome back the first-half champs with lots of energy and enthusiasm.
Friday, July 16 is Turn Back the Clock Night at Fraser Field. The Spirit will celebrate the history of baseball on the North Shore throughout the last century. Each inning the Spirit will recognize a different decade of baseball from the Lynn Frasers of the early 1900's to today's Spirit
