Cutters-Jackals Square Off In One Game Playoff

(West Haven, CT- July 14, 2004) The Northeast League's South Division has come down to a one-game tie breaker between the New Haven County Cutters and the New Jersey Jackals with the first half title and an automatic berth in the 2004 Northeast League Playoffs on the line in a 7:05 PM game tomorrow at Yale Field.

Both teams finished with identical 25-21 records in the Northeast League's South Division. The one-game "winner-take-all" match up will have the Cutters playing in front of the home crowd. Home field for this matchup was determined by the Cutters having the edge in the season series 4-3.

"This is the most important professional baseball game in New Haven since the Cutters came on the scene," said Cutters GM Tim Kelly. "This is a chance for the whole area to rally around their newest team and root them on to a first half championship and a playoff berth. This is a great opportunity for New Haven baseball fans to urge on the home team that has two players going to Athens, Greece, for the Olympics."

The Cutters are winners of five of their last seven games and can clinch a playoff spot in front of the home crowd in just the team's second complete month of playing at Historic Yale Field.

New Haven's magic number was one with the Jackals playing a doubleheader this afternoon against the Elmira Pioneers. New Jersey won game one 7-3 and outlasted Elmira in game two 3-2.

Cutters Season Ticket and Mini Plan Holders will be given complimentary tickets to this tie-breaker game in thanks for their continued support of the team.

Thirsty Thursday will be the promotion for this one-game playoff with $1 beers for Budweiser and Bud Light.

The 92-game season is split into two 46-game halves with the team leading the North and South Divisions automatically qualifying for the playoffs if they win either half. In the event of a team winning both halves a wildcard spot becomes available with that team being selected by best overall record regardless of division.
