Saginaw Spirit News Release
Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit lost to the Soo Greyhounds, 10-6, on Friday, September 22, at GFL Memorial Gardens. Kaleb Papineau manned the Saginaw goal crease, while Charlie Schenkel started for the Soo.
Like any preseason game, there was somewhat of a feeling out process in the first period. The Spirit fell shorthanded after a Roberto Mancini slashing penalty 7:25 into the first period. The Greyhounds would not be able to capitalize on the opportunity, and the first period would end scoreless. Sault Ste. Marie took an 8-2 shot advantage into the dressing room after 20 minutes.
The second period began to supply the game's first scoresheet entries. Tate Vader opened the scoring for the Soo with an assist from Travis Hayes at 3:54. Brady Martin, the Soo's first round selection in 2023, shortly followed with a goal of his own for a 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds' Julian Fantino, with an assist from Brodie McConnell-Barker, would score his first of the preseason at 6:47 for a 3-0 lead.
Lincoln Moore would receive a roughing penalty with 11:30 left in the second period. A Brenden Sirizzoti one-timer from the left faceoff circle just 22 seconds into the penalty make it a 4-0 game.
Spirit defenseman Will Bishop got Saginaw on the board at 17:31 of the middle frame. Strong corner work from Michael Misa followed by a centering feed from Calem Mangone resulted in Bishop's shot past Charlie Schenkel's glove for the 4-1 score. The Greyhounds would follow with a pair of goals from Ethan Montroy and Owen Allard, holding a 6-1 lead after the second period, and outshooting Saginaw 19-13.
The Greyhounds would score just 28 seconds into the third period- a Justin Cloutier goal with assists from Travis Hayes and Brady Martin. Two minutes later, Tate Vader scored his second goal of the night with an assist from Marco Mignosa. Brady Martin added a powerplay goal with Josh Glavin in the penalty box for tripping, with assists to Caeden Carlisle and Alex Kostov for a 9-1 lead.
The Spirit would soon start to climb back. Calem Mangone scored his first goal of the preseason 6:49 into the third period with assists from Michael Misa and Spirit rookie Aiden Young. Valentin Zhugin added a goal of his own at 8:33 after deflecting a Zayne Parekh shot from the right point. The secondary assist went to Roberto Mancini. Aiden Young cashed in on a powerplay goal with Hunter Solomon in the penalty box, with assists to PJ Forgione and Liam Storch to bring the game to 9-4.
Michael Misa and Valentin Zhugin would link up again, this time it was a Misa wrister from the left-wing circle on the powerplay for a 9-5 game at 13:35. After Travis Hayes and Valentin Zhugin took minor penalties in quick succession, a short four-on-four resulted in a Soo powerplay. Roberto Mancini brought the Spirit within three, batting the puck out of mid-air past Schenkel's shoulder.
Brady Martin added his hat-trick goal in the final second of play, resulting in a 10-6 final score
Saginaw will return home for their final preseason game against the Soo Greyhounds Saturday, September 23, at the Dow Event Center. Puck drop is at 7:05PM.
