Spirit Dropped in Shootout

The Saginaw Spirit played host to Western Conference rival Windsor Spitfires on Friday night, falling to the Spitfires 3-2 in a shootout decision.

The Spirit opened up the scoring against the Spitfires on an early first period goal, to go up 1-0 over Windsor. Nick Moutrey put home a nice goal for Saginaw that was set up by Jimmy Lodge and Tye Felhaber at 3:10 of the period. The Spitfires had countless scoring opportunities against the Spirit but could not beat Saginaw's starting goaltender Jake Paterson. Shots on goal after the first period were even at 13 between Saginaw and Windsor.

The Spirit started the second period with a strong penalty kill, keeping up tough defensive play against the Spitfires. Just after both teams moved back to even strength hockey, Luke Cairns knocked a pass off his skate and netted the Spirit's second goal of the night at the 2:32 mark, making it a 2-0 game. Mitchell Stephens and Dylan Sadowy were credited with the assists. The Spitfires thought they had put a goal on the board late in the second period on a power play, but after review were denied the tally. The Spirit led the shots on goal during the second period of play, outshooting Windsor 15-12. Saginaw's Ryan Orban headed to the box at 19:03 for high sticking, putting the Spirit on a penalty kill to start the second period.

The Windsor Spitfires took advantage of their extra man on the ice and snuck in a power play goal 51 seconds into the third period off the stick of Cristiano DiGiacinto, with assists coming from Aaron Luchuk and Jamie Lewis. Windsor cut into the Saginaw lead, making it a 2-1 game. The Spirit played a physical game against the Spitfires and moved to the penalty kill late in the third period. Windsor put some offensive pressure on Saginaw and tied the game 2-2 at the 17:50 mark, slipping a goal past Saginaw's Jake Paterson. Windsor's Jamie Lewis was credited with the game-tying goal, with the help of Chris Marchese and Logan Brown. The teams headed to overtime with the Spitfires leading the Spirit in shots on goal 41-37.

The Spirit and Spitfires couldn't finish the game in 5 minutes of overtime and headed to a shootout where Saginaw's Dylan Sadowy netted a nice goal against Windsor's starting goaltender Alex Fotinos. Jimmy Lodge and Luke Cairns couldn't find the back of the net for the Spirit, and the Spitfires Sam Povoroznoiuk scored the game-winning goal for Windsor, defeating Saginaw 3-2. Final shots on goal read Windsor 46, Saginaw 41.

The Saginaw Spirit are back at the Dow Event Center Saturday, November 15th to take on the Oshawa Generals for their second home game of the weekend. Puck is set to drop at 7:11 p.m.
