Spirit drop second straight
August 9, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
Rolando Valles kept the Spirit bats quiet at the New Fraser Field and led the New Haven County Cutters to their second straight win, 5-2, on Tuesday night.
Valles dominated the North Shore offense all night, holding the Spirit to just two runs on four hits in nine full innings of work. His sixth victory of the season improved the Cutters to 14-9 on the season. Jake Mullis suffered his fourth loss of the season as the Spirit fell to 13-9. He allowed five runs (three earned) on ten hits in six innings of work.
Andy Howdeshell put the Spirit ahead early in this one with his second home run in as many nights. The solo shot was his fourth of the season.
That was all the offense the Spirit could muster in this one, however, as Valles kept them from getting any more runs across the plate.
The Spirit defense hurt their own cause in this game, with three costly errors. The Cutters picked up two unearned runs because of the Spirit mistakes in the field.
New Haven gave their starter all the run support he would need with a four-run third inning. The inning didn't get off to a great start for Mullis, as he hit leadoff hitter Mike LaRosa. Keto Anderson followed that with a single and two batters later Derrick Gibson drew a walk to load the bases. Bill Peavey scored two on an RBI single, giving the Cutters their first lead of the game. Junior Zamora plated the third Cutters run with an RBI single, and Orlando Encarnacion sent the final Cutters run of the inning across the plate on a fielders choice.
The Cutters offense scored one more run in the seventh when Gibson scored on a sacrifice fly from Jeff Brooks. Peter Soteropoulos entered the game in the seventh and recorded all three outs in the inning. Soteropoulos was solid in relief, going three innings without allowing a run.
The Spirit staged a rally in the ninth inning, picking up their second run of the night. Rob Fischer reached base on an error from the Cutters shortstop to get things started for North Shore. Vic Davilla sent him to third with a double, and he scored on Brian Macchi's ground ball out to the second baseman. The Spirit comeback efforts stalled after that, however, as Howdeshell flied out to center to end the game.
The Spirit will try to snap the two-game losing streak tomorrow when Bryan Morse takes the mound in a special 12:05 start at the New Fraser Field.
