North Shore Spirit News Release
LYNN, MA -- The second half season of baseball began last night for the North Shore Spirit. The Quebec Capitales invaded New Fraser Field and walked away with a 4-2 win.
Spirit starting pitcher Miguel Baez worked five inning allowing nine hits while striking out nine, but it wasn't enough to hold Quebec at bay. In the third inning the Capitales jumped out to a one nothing lead. Jake Burnham led the inning off with a single and advanced to third on an Osmani Garcia double. The North East League's RBI leader Carlos Rodriquez drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to score Burnham for the 1-0 lead.
In the fifth Quebec shortstop Abdrubal Oropeza started the three run inning off with a single and scored on a Benoit Emond single to make it 2-0. Two Spirit errors by second baseman Marcos Agramonte set the table for two more Quebec runs. Agramonte misplayed a Garcia ground ball putting runners on first and third. Quebec then put on their running shoes and it paid off when Oropeza scored as part of a double steal as the Agramonte throw to the plate bounced past catcher Frank Charles for a 3-0 lead. Quebec added their final run of the game on a Rodriquez RBI single.
The Spirit mounted a rally in the seventh inning. Ed Muth walked and Fran Riordan singled with Muth advancing to third on a Jose Castellanos fly out to right field. After a Yuri Sanchez strike out Agramonte hit a triple to the gap to score the Spirit runs.
North Shore starter Miguel Baez (4-2) took the loss. Quebec starter Jason Cly(4-3) picked up his fourth win, working 6 2/3 innings.
The win drops the Spirit to 1-0 in the second season, Quebec is 1-0.
The clubs play game two of their three game series Saturday at New Fraser Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00PM.
You can listen to all Spirit games home and away on flagship station WESX. The pre-game begins at 6:30.
Spirit Notes: Spirit relievers Nate Beucler and Joe Ricciardi combined to work four scoreless innings. Marcos Agramonte went 4-5 at the plate and collected RBI number 18 and 19. Ed Muth and Fran Riordan had two hits each for the Spirit. The Spirit offense tallied 11 hits on the night. The Spirit by virtue of their first half North Division championship are a lock for the playoffs. The goal now is to secure a, if needed, fifth game home playoff date which comes with a second season championship.
