Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors scored six runs in the bottom of the first and led the rest of the way, defeating the Bangor Lumberjacks 12-9 in the first game of the second half of the season Friday night in Allentown.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off Ambassador starter Miguel Perez. Schuyler Doakes led off the game with a double, then Sandy Martinez bunted him over to third. Donnie Ross then singled to score Doakes. After Lorenzo de la Cruz struck out, Todd Brock walked, then Josh Brinkley singled, driving in Ross. Two more singles from Edwin Thompson and Brad Hargreaves followed, and Brock and Brinkley both scored. Matt Tindell struck out looking to end the inning.
The Ambassadors responded in a big way in the bottom of the first. After Jorge Diaz grounded out, Ender Gonzalez was hit by a pitch from Bangor starter Jerry Long. Then Davilla walked, but he was picked off of first base. With two out, Marlon Roche hit his second home run of the season to left, then Bordenick singled and Brian Macchi hit his first professional home run to left center to give the Ambassadors the lead. After Greg Stevens walked, Tito Cruz, just acquired in a trade with Berkshire, hit another two run home run to left field.
The Lumberjacks would add two runs in the third and fourth innings, with the Ambassadors keeping pace, adding one in the third and another in the fifth. Allentown scored another run in the sixth to make the lead three. Then in the eighth inning, after Diaz had doubled and Gonzalez been hit by another pitch, Vic Davilla hit a three run home run on the first pitch he saw from Donnie Thomas to dead center field. It was the seventh home run of the season for Davilla, who is now eleven home runs shy of the career Northeast League record.
The runs would turn out to be important. Orlando Encarnacion came in to pitch in the ninth, and gave up two runs while getting two outs and left with the bases loaded and the lead four runs. Carlos Gomez came in and allowed one single, before getting Hargreaves to ground out to end the game.
The win snaps a seven game losing streak for the Ambassadors. Perez picked up his first win of the season, pitching eight innings and striking out nine. Long took the loss, he walked five and hit three batters in his four innings of work. The Ambassadors had four batters hit by a pitch in the game. Cruz finished the game 3-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI. Sandy Martinez was 4-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored in a losing effort. The two teams play the second of three games tomorrow night. Mike Riley takes the mound for the Ambassadors, he will be opposed by Tim Rall. Tomorrow night is Electronic #1 Finger night.
