Spirit Beat Hounds 4-1

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) The Saginaw Spirit beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-1 Wednesday night in Sault Ste. Marie. The Spirit, with the second best power play squad in the league, took advantage of three Hounds penalties for three power play goals. The Spirit gain two points with the win for a total of 77 points and a record of 37-20-0-3, good for second place in the OHL West Division and fourth place in the Western Conference.

The Spirit and the Hounds traded goals in the first period. Saginaw center Tom Pyatt (NYR) scored a goal with the Spirit's first shot on net, :58 seconds into the game. Centers Ryan McDonough and Ryan O'Marra (EDM) tallied assists on Pyatt's goal. Soo winger Cody Thornton answered moments later with a goal at 8:43 in the first, tying the score 1-1. It would be the Hounds only goal of the evening.

Saginaw sealed the game in the next two periods. Spirit winger Patrick Asselin retook the lead with a power play goal at the 14:45 mark of the second, assisted by winger Tomas Zaborsky (NYR) and center Tyler Haskins. Saginaw's O'Marra moved the score to 3-1 with a power play goal at 1:30 in the third, assisted by McDonough and Pyatt. The Spirit lead advanced to 4-1 when Pyatt scored his third point of the evening with a power play goal at 14:51 in the third period. Center Cody Bass (OTT) and defenseman Andrew Hotham assisted.

Spirit netminder Ryan Daniels (OTT) notched 26 saves in the win.

The Saginaw win caps off a successful month for the Spirit, with a record of 8-2-0-1 in February. The Spirit's head-to-head record against the Hounds this season moves to 6-2-0-0. The Spirit host the Guelph Storm Friday night, March 2nd, and the Mississauga Ice Dogs Saturday night, March 3rd. Both contests start at 7:11 PM.
