Spirit Bats Alive in 9-2 Win
July 15, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit bats were booming last night at The New Fraser Field in Lynn. Charged by a Mike Tejada 3-run homerun in the first, the Spirit went on to beat Bangor 9-2. In total the North Shore offense pounded out 13 hits.
Sparked by a 6-0 lead after two innings, starting pitcher Jeremy Sugarman (2-1) cruised to his second win of the season. Sugarman worked a complete game, scatting six hits and striking out 12 Lumberjacks.
Sugarman was inserted into the Spirit pitching rotation on short notice by manager John Kennedy because Brian Morse is still healing after suffering a minor injury in his last start. Sugarman's performance helped to solidify his position as a valuable asset on the Spirit staff. Sugarman's versatility has produced 2 wins as a starter, 5 saves in a closer role and effect long relief stints.
The Spirit scored four times on five hits in the first inning, along with Tejada's 3-run homer, Ed Muth collected his twenty third RBI of the season with a single.
In the second, the Sprit scored twice more. Marcos Agramonte knocked in Yuri Sanchez with his league leading eighth triple of the year and later scored on a Tejada sacrifice fly.
The Spirit would score three more in the seventh. Carlos Sepulveda knocked in a run and Muth singled home two more. Muth finished with 3 RBI.
Bangor scored single runs in the third and ninth innings. In the third Donnie Ross belted a solo homerun and in the ninth pinch hitter Melendez knocked home a run.
Bangor starter John Vigue (4-3) worked through a rocky start to pitch 6 1/3, but suffered his third loss of the season.
The Spirit and Lumberjacks close out their three game series Wednesday afternoon at New Fraser Field. The gates open at 11 AM. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
You can catch all the play-by-play of Spirit baseball on WESX AM 1230. The pre-game show begins at 11:30.
Spirit Notes: Spirit pitcher John Kelly and third baseman Jason Startari were honored prior to the start of Tuesday's game for their great play in the month of June. Both players received a Sylvain Street Grille Player of the Game award and gift certificates to Sylvain Street Grille in Peabody. Sylvain Street Grille owner Ernie Tremblay and Spirit owner Nick Lopardo presented the awards... There is an interesting race for the team RBI lead. Ed Muth leads the team with 25 followed by Agramonte, Startari and Sepulveda with 23. Tejada's homerun was his team leading fifth of the year.
