Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors stranded the tying run at second base in the ninth and beat the Elmira Pioneers 7-5 Tuesday night in Elmira.

Allentown jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second off Elmira starter Hatuey Mendoza. With one out, the Ambassadors got six straight singles, including a two run single from Ender Gonzalez to score four. Also in there was an RBI single from Greg Schmidt, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Vic Davilla hit a sacrifice fly to add the fifth run. The Ambassadors were also helped by an error on third baseman Dennis Abreu, one of four error the Pioneers would commit during the game.

In the bottom of the inning, the Pioneers scored three to stay right in the game. An infield single from Alex Marconi followed by a bloop single by Brian Jones put runners on first and second. Then Ryan Lehr hit a sharp ground ball to Jorge Diaz, who bobbled it and instead of a double play, got no one out. With the bases loaded, Perez got Scott Hunter to fly out to shallow left. Marconi tagged, but was not going to try to score until the throw from Brian Macchi airmailed home plate. Marconi was thrown out at the plate by pitcher Julio Perez backing up the play. Rolando Bello walked to load the bases again, then Ryan Webb unloaded them with a three run double. On the play, Macchi slipped and fell as he was turning to run after the ball. All three runs were unearned.

Each team would add in a run in the sixth, and the Ambassadors would add another in the top of the ninth before sending the game to the bottom of the ninth with a 7-4 lead. John Boker, who had pitched a perfect eighth, got one out, but then hit Bello in the back and allowed a single to Webb, who finished the game 3-4. Jose Guerrero came in and got Abreu to hit a sharp groundball to short. The ball took a bad hop and hit Tito Cruz in the shoulder and his throw to first went into the dugout, allowing Bello to score. Ed Ott was then thrown out of the game for arguing about checked swings called balls. Cleatus Davidson then lined out right to Davilla at first for the second out. Rafael Alvarez popped out to Diaz to end the game.

The win goes to Perez, who pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits with three walks and ten strikeouts. His record is now 2-3. Mendoza took the loss. He is now 3-3. Guerrero got his first save. The Ambassadors are now 2-3 in the second half. Elmira is 3-2. The two teams play the third game of this four game series tomorrow night, with Mike Riley taking the mound for Allentown.
