Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, Mich. - Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced Wednesday (Nov. 16) that the team has executed a trade with the North Bay Battalion to acquire forward Nicholas Sima, defenseman Cam Gauvreau, a second round pick in 2023 (NB), second round pick in 2024 (NB), third round pick in 2024 (NB), third round pick in 2023 (ER) and a third round pick in 2026 (KNG) in exchange for Josh Bloom, Brayden Hislop and London's sixth round pick in 2025.
"This was an extremely difficult decision for us as an organization to make," said Drinkill. "Josh and Brayden are great young men that gave everything they could when wearing a Spirit jersey and we wish them nothing but the best in North Bay. Part of a General Manager's job is to evaluate and make decisions that at times can be tough. Today is one of those tough days, but I feel that this is the best decision to make for our club at this time."
Sima, a 6'2" right wing from Mississauga, Ont., is in his second season of OHL action. The 17-year-old has appeared in 76 regular season games and seven playoff games, tallying seven goals, ten assists, and 17 points. Drafted 27th overall by the Battalion in 2021, Sima was also named a C-rank NHL prospect by NHL Central Scouting in October.
A rugged, stay-at-home defenseman, Gauvreau joins the Spirit with 58 games of regular season OHL action and six postseason appearances. In that span, the 6'1" blueliner from Hannon, Ont. tallied nine points and was a +23.
"We are very excited to be adding Nick Sima and Cam Gauvreau to our talented group of players," Drinkill continued. "Sima is a player we coveted going back to his draft year. He's a highly competitive player with skill and size, an element we felt was missing from our forward group. Our staff looks forward to getting him into our system and continuing to build on his strong foundation of a young OHL player. Gauvreau is a defenseman that plays the game extremely hard. He competes and will bring an edge to our back end this season. We feel our system will continue to help him grow his game and we look forward to what lies ahead with Cam in a Spirit uniform."
Drafted with the 30th overall pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Josh Bloom skated in 140 games with the Saginaw Spirit, collecting 43 goals, 48 assists, and 91 points. The Oakville, Ont. native was named the 22nd captain in Spirit history prior to the 2022-2023 campaign.
Brayden Hislop was acquired via a trade with the Owen Sound attack on November 15, 2021. He appeared in 61 games with the Spirit, scoring six goals, 16 assists and 22 points, and was a +5.
"Josh is a player we drafted four years ago in the second round," said Drinkill. "We are extremely proud of the player, and more importantly the young man, he became while playing in Saginaw. Brayden came up last year from Junior B and turned himself into a highly coveted defenseman in this league. He's a player that did everything right on and off the ice as a part of the Spirit. Both players will be missed on the ice and in the room, but we also know they are going to a great place with great people in North Bay. We will be rooting for them from afar."
Sima will wear number 92 with Saginaw, while Gauvreau will wear number 3.
The Spirit head out on the road this week, making stops in Niagara, Erie, and Hamilton. Puck drop from the Meridian Centre in Niagara, Ont. is set for 7:00pm on Thursday, November 17th.
