Spikes Welcome Record Crowd to Park, Fall to 'Cutters 7-6

STATE COLLEGE - The State College Spikes welcomed a record standing-room-only sellout crowd of 5,807 to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday night, and the second record-smashing crowd of the year at the ballpark saw the Spikes fall to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 7-6.

The crowd topped the previous high of 5,775, set earlier this season on June 19th when the Spikes (20-21) faced the Crosscutters (25-16) in an Opening Night battle. It was the third straight record-breaking crowd to feature Williamsport as the opponent. Fans also packed the park for Mifflin & Juniata County Night, and witnessed a spectacular post-game fireworks show.

It was also the ninth sellout crowd in the five-year history of the Spikes, and the 23^rd crowd of 5,000 or better at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The game did not start well for State College on the field, though. Williamsport strung together four hits to plate three runs in the first inning off New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Tyler Waldron (2-3). The Crosscutters then extended their lead out further, and led 6-2 in the seventh thanks to Cameron Rupp's solo home run.

However, the Spikes fought back with power of their own, with a seventh-inning solo homer from Cole White and a pinch-hit, two-run shot from Andy Vasquez to draw within a 7-5 margin in the eighth inning. In the ninth, Adalberto Santos led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and went to third on a passed ball before scoring on Gerlis Rodriguez's RBI single. Williamsport reliever Jake Borup (2) would elicit a pop-up from Chase Lyles to end the game one batter later.

Santos, White and Matt Skirving each had multi-hit games for State College, with White adding an RBI triple.

Waldron took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and striking out three over four innings of work. The right-hander also had his scoreless innings streak snapped at 14 1/3 frames.

Crosscutters reliever Lisalberto Bonilla (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over three innings of work. Borup picked up the save with 1 2/3 innings of one-run ball.

Saturday, the Spikes hit the road for a four-game road trip, starting with a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Auburn Doubledays at Falcon Park. The first game of a two-game series will feature State College right-hander Zack Von Rosenberg (1-6) taking on Auburn right-hander Drew Hutchison (1-1).
