7-run Inning Helps Vermont Snap 5-game Losing Streak With 10-1 Win Friday

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters snapped a five-game losing streak with the help of a seven-run fifth inning in a 10-1 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades in New York-Penn League action Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters led 3-1 when they sent 13 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and used eight base hits to score the seven runs. The first six batters in the inning singled, including RBI singles for Chad Mozingo, Blake Kelso, Jason Martinson and David Freitas. Justin Miller added an RBI single later in the inning and Connor Rowe capped off the seven-run outburst with his second hit of the inning to plate the final run.

Vermont starter Matt Swynenberg (3-2) gave up a run on three straight singles in the first inning, but then settled down and allowed just three more hits in his 5 2/3 innings of work. Swyenberg, who had allowed 15 runs over his last 10 1/3 innings in his previous three starts, had five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Reliever Ryan Demmin struckout five and gave up one hit in his 2 1/3 scoreless innings, while Mark Herrera struckout two in a perfect ninth inning. The three Vermont pitchers combined to strikeout 12 Renegade batters while not allowing a walk for the first time in a game this season.

After Vermont fell behind 1-0 in the first, the Lake Monsters quickly took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Martinson singled with two outs and Freitas followed with a towering two-run homer to leftcenter for his third home run of the season. Ronnie LaBrie added a solo homer, his second of the year, in the second inning for a 3-1 Vermont advantage.

Rowe went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI, while Freitas and Martinson both had two hits and scored two runs for Vermont. Derek Dietrich and Steve Tinoco both had two hits for the Renegades, while starter Miguel Sierra (2-2) was charged with six runs on seven hits in four-plus innings to take the loss for Hudson Valley (18-20).

Vermont (24-16), which wrapped up the seven-game homestand with wins in the opener and finale, head out on a four-game roadtrip with a pair of two-game series at Lowell and Tri-City. The Lake Monsters return to Centennial on Wednesday when they open a six-game homestand against the Auburn Doubledays.
