State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA-Evan Chambers drove in four runs and capped the State College Spikes' scoring with a three-run homer, combining with a stellar relief effort by Tyler Cox to help power the Spikes to a 9-5 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Chambers delivered the first and last runs batted in on the game for State College (24-24), going 2-for-4 with his second homer of the year and scoring three runs as well. Aaron Baker also delivered a solid performance, going 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and two runs batted in.
Cox (5-2) went 5 2/3 innings from the fourth to ninth innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five. The left-hander kept Aberdeen (22-26) off the board until the ninth and went five-plus innings for the second time this year to take the team lead in victories.
State College came out of the gates with three runs on four hits in the first inning, matching their total from all of Wednesday's game. The Spikes' total of nine hits also surpassed the amount hits they collected as a team over the past two nights against the IronBirds.
Victor Black started for the Spikes and went 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits. The Pirates' 2009 supplemental first-round draft pick also walked two and struck out two in the effort.
The win snapped the Spikes' seven-game losing streak against Aberdeen, which stretched back to 2007.
Friday, the Spikes go on the road to face the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays) in a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, NY. The Spikes begin a three-game series by sending right-hander Jason Erickson (1-1) to the mound. The Renegades will counter with left-hander Kyle Lobstein (1-3).
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 6:35 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Dutchess Stadium.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3-3WZ.
