Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

AUBURN, NY --- Welinton Ramirez's RBI infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Auburn Doubledays a 3-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Falcon Park.

Markus Brisker led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk off Vermont reliever Clayton Dill. Brisker advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a Ryan Goins infield single to second base. After Dill issued an intentional walk to Sean Ochinko to load the bases, Ramirez won the game with an infield single to third base to score Brisker with the winning run.

Auburn took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a pair of runs, including an unearned run, off Vermont starter Mitchell Clegg. Kyle GIlligan led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a Ryan Schimpf forceout. Ryan Goins followed with an RBI triple to centerfield scoring Schimpf with an unearned run.

The Lake Monsters tied the game with a pair of unearned runs of their own in the fifth inning. Vermont's first run scored on back-to-back two-base throwing errors by third baseman Gilligan to start the inning and Vermont tied the game on a Francisco Soriano RBI single. Soriano also singled to leadoff the game to extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games.

Goins was 4-for-5 with an RBI for Auburn (18-30), while Ramirez was 2-for-5. Doubleday starter Scott Gracey allowed the two unearned runs on six hits with five strikeouts over seven innings, while Casey Beck (1-2) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in the top of the 10th for his first win. A night after Auburn pitchers combined to walk nine Lake Monsters, three Doubleday pitchers combined for no walks and 10 strikeouts on Thursday.

J.R. Higley was 2-for-4 with a run and a double as he extended his current hitting streak to eight straight game. Clegg gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts over five innings, while Dill (2-3) retired just one batter in the 10th as he picked up his third loss of the season.

Since a five-game losing streak left Vermont one game under at .500 at 19-20, the Lake Monsters (23-24) have now won one and then lost one four straight times over the last eight games to remain one game under .500 mark.

Vermont returns home on Friday at 7:05 pm to begin a three-game homestand againt the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Friday is "Tribute To Montreal" night at historic Centennial Field and includes an appearance by former Montreal Expos pitcher Steve Rogers.
