State College Spikes News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Evan Mendoza finished a home run shy of the cycle, and the State College Spikes brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers' 13-hit attack was too much to overcome as the Spikes took a 5-1 defeat on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Trailing 5-0 going into the ninth, the Spikes got a leadoff double from Mendoza, who then scored on Josh Lopez's RBI single. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, the Spikes (18-15) then brought tying run up twice. However, a strikeout and a lineout double play ended the game.
Mendoza's three-hit game was the fifth of his professional career, and marked his third straight multi-hit game.
Mahoning Valley (21-13) took the lead on Ulysses Cantu's run-scoring single in the first, then expanded it with a three-run fourth keyed by Jonathan Laureano's RBI triple. Cantu pushed the Scrappers' advantage to 5-0 with another run-scoring single in the sixth.
State College starter Daniel Castano (6-1) took his first loss of the season after yielding four runs on 11 hits, a walk and a hit batsman over 4 2/3 innings. The outing was the shortest of the year for Castano.
Felix Tati (2-2) tossed five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Mahoning Valley. Tati gave up two hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Kyle Nelson (3) recorded the last two outs in the ninth for the save.
Tuesday, the Spikes and Scrappers finish their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with a 7:05 p.m. rubber match. State College will send right-hander Sam Tewes (2-3) to the mound, while Mahoning Valley will go with right-hander Gregori Vasquez (1-1).
It will be Christmas in July at the ballpark, as fans will get a little taste of the North Pole at the ballpark with a special guest due to arrive in the "nick" of time. Plus, fans will get a special gift with the return of $2 Walking Taco Tuesday, presented by B94.5, with Walking Tacos just $2 apiece from multiple ballpark locations.
