BURLINGTON, VT --- Adrian Tovalin went 4-for-4 with four runs, six RBI and home runs in each of his first two at bats, including a grand slam homer in the 3rd inning, to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 9-1 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
Tovalin, playing in his first game with the ValleyCats after being promoted from Rookie League Greenville, gave Tri-City a 1-0 lead in the second with a line drive 406-foot home run to left field. Then in the fourth with the bases loaded on an 0-2 pitch, Tovalin hit the grand slam just over the fence in left center for a 5-1 lead.
Tri-City added single runs in the sixth when Tovalin scored on a wild pitch and in the eighth inning when Tovalin, scored his fourth run of the game on a Jacob Myers RBI single to center. In the ninth after a Connor MacDonald RBI single, Tovalin picked up his sixth RBI of the night when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for ValleyCats ninth run.
Corbin Martin, Houston's second-round pick in 2017 draft, allowed one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts over the first four innings (59 pitches, 40 strikes) in his Tri-City debut, while 11th-round pick Brandon Bielak (1-0) allowed two hits and struckout six over three innings in his first outing for the ValleyCats.
Vermont had tied the game1-1 in the third with an unearned run on a Payton Squier sacrifice fly scoring Anthony Churlin, who had led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a Will Toffey single and fielding error.
Lake Monsters starter Argenis Blanco (1-4) allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts to take the loss, while Squier was 1-for-2 with the sac fly and Ryan Gridley 2-for-4.
The loss was the second straight overall for the Lake Monsters, while Vermont has also lost five straight home games and six of its last seven at Centennial after a seven-game home win streak June 28-July 14 (now 9-9 at Centennial, 10-6 on road).
Vemront (19-15) will look to salvage one of the three-game series with Tri-City on Tuesday morning with the annual 11:00 a.m. camp day start.
