State College Spikes News Release

UNIVERSITY PARK - The State College Spikes lost their franchise record sixth straight game on Monday evening, falling to the Auburn Doubledays by the score of 11-7. The Spikes out hit the Doubledays 11-10, and Auburn only got base hits in four innings, but in those frames the runs came in bunches.

Moises Robles (4-9) suffered the loss after allowing six runs in only 2/3 of an inning of work. The Spikes starter threw only 20 pitches, but five of them went for extra-base hits as the Spikes were never able to climb out of the early hole.

Auburn wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as the first nine batters of the game all had productive at-bats. There were six hits, two sacrifices and a hit batsman, which lead to six runs and chased Robles from the game. In the bottom of the frame, the Spikes inched back into the game thanks to an RBI ground out from Justin Byler that made the score 6-1 after one.

After zeroes in the second and third, the Doubledays went back to work in the fourth, scoring three more runs, this time off of reliever Eddy Nunez, to push their lead to 9-1. Former Penn Stater, Gary Amato who was making his professional debut at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park then came out of the pen and stymied the Auburn offense, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, including striking out the first five batters that he faced, to give the Spikes a chance to get back into the game.

That is exactly what State College would do. The bats came to life in the fifth, scoring three times to trim the deficit to 9-4. Smelin Perez and Austin McClune jump-started the rally with back-to-back hits that put runners at second and third with nobody out. Brian Friday then chased the pair home with an RBI double and later came around to score on an RBI groundout to claw back into the game. The comeback would continue in the eighth as the Spikes plated three more runs with Smelin Perez' second double of the game providing the spark, as he drove in a pair to make the score 9-7 after eighth.

Auburn seized the momentum right back, however, as the Doubledays took advantage of a walk and a throwing error to score twice more in the ninth to make the score 11-7, which is how the game would end.

The Spikes will look to snap their late season skid tomorrow evening when they take on the Doubledays once again, with game time set for 7:05 PM. Former American Idol contestant Ryan Starr will be on hand to close out the Spikes Idol Series. Great seats are still available and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com or in person at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
