BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters pounded out a season-high 15 hits and secured their first home winning season since 2000 with a 9-5 victory over the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

With the victory, the Lake Monsters are now 18-16 at Centennial this season with just one home game remaining on Tuesday. The last time that Vermont finished a season over .500 at home was when the 2000 Vermont Expos went 26-11 at Centennial.

Stephen Englund got Vermont out to an early lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. Later in the inning Jean Alvarez tripled and Boomer Whiting singled him home for a 3-0 Vermont lead. The Lake Monsters made it 4-0 in the third on a solo home run from Garrett Bass, his team leading sixth of the season.

Lowell scored three runs, but just one earned, in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. The Spinners scored on a passed ball, Will Vazquez RBI single and an error by centerfielder Englund. But the Lake Monsters quickly got those three runs back in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-out, two-run single from Aaron Seuss.

Bass got his second RBI of the game with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning as Vermont scored twice for a 9-3 lead. Lowell used three walks and a two-run single from Oscar Tejada in the eighth inning to get within four runs, but Ryan Harrison got Yamaico Navarro to groundout with the bases loaded to end the threat.

Whiting went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Englund was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and his first home run with Vermont. Starter Hassan Pena gave up three runs (one earned) over four innings and reliever Ryan Buchter (1-2) tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts for the victory as five Lake Monster pitchers combined to strikeout 13 Spinners.

Carlos Fernandez went 3-for-4 with a run for Lowell (40-32), while Tejada, Vazquez and Rafael Cabreja each had two hits. Spinner starter Tony Bajoczky (0-2) allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in 3.1 innings for the loss.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Vermont (38-36), which will send Cole Kimball to the mound in the home finale on Tuesday against Lowell at 7:05 p.m. Along with free waterbottles for the first 1,000 fans, the Lake Monsters will be holding a jersey auction (green BP jerseys) before and during the game on Tuesday.

NOTES: Vermont is now 4-9 against Lowell this season, including 2-4 at Centennial Field ... The Lake Monster home runs from Stephen Englund and Garrett Bass were the first homers for Vermont since a Michael Burgess home run on August 25th ... It was also the first time that Vermont had more than one home run in a game since August 23rd ... The 15 hits for the Lake Monsters were a season-high and the most hits for Vermont at Centennial Field since 15 vs. Oneonta on August 19, 2005.
