Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Washington Nationals announced today that they expect to select the contract of five players on Tuesday, including that of 2006 Vermont Lake Monsters outfielder Justin Maxwell.

When Washington does promote Maxwell, he will become the 49th former Vermont player to reach the Major Leagues and the first former Lake Monster. (The 48 other players were all with Vermont when they were known as Expos).

Maxwell, the Nationals second-round selection in the 2005 draft out of the University of Maryland, has split time this season between the Single-A Hagerstown Suns and Potomac Nationals. He hit .281 with 25 doubles, 26 homers, 80 RBI and 35 steals between Hagerstown and Potomac, the only player in all of Minor League baseball this season with at least 25 doubles, 25 homers and 25 stolen bases.

Last season with Vermont, Maxwell hit .269 (73-for-271) with 36 runs, 11 doubles, three triples, four homers, 33 RBI and 20 stolen bases (two straight steals of home) in 74 games.

In other alumni news, Valentino Pascucci heads into the final day of the Pacific Coast League with a league-leading 34 home runs for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes (Florida Marlins). He has a two home run lead over Rick Ankiel, now with the St. Louis Cardinals, and Craig Brazell of Omaha.
