Wednesday, July 4th - 1:00 PM
Medlar Field at Lubrano Park - University Park, PA
Game #16 / Home Game # 8
RHP Tyson Brummett (0-1, 3.00) vs. RHP Nicolas Suero (1-0, 1.64)
TONIGHT'S STARTER: RHP NICOLAS SUERO will be making his third appearance of the 2007 season, and his second against his former club. Suero made a "relief" start on June 21st against Williamsport. The game began in the top of the third after being suspended due to rain two days prior. Suero tossed five shutout innings, scattering only three hits while striking out five. In his second appearance of the season, Suero tossed six strong innings against Jamestown, allowing two runs on four hits. So far this season, opponents are hitting only .171 against him. Suero was obtained by the Pirates as an 18-year old free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2002. In 2003, he posted a 7-1 record, and allowed only six earned runs in 41.2 innings of work. In 2005, he was 10th in the GCL with a 3.28 ERA. Last year, he only walked two batters in 48.1 innings of work. Suero split last season between full season Hickory of the South Atlantic League and Williamsport. Suero also spent the latter half of the 2005 season in a 'Cutters uniform.
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: RHP Tyson Brummett will make his third appearance of the season, and his second start, when he takes the mound for the Crosscutters this afternoon. Brummett was the Phillies' 7th round selection in the 2007 MLB Draft out of UCLA. During his senior season he posted a 10-5 record in 19 games, allowing 53 earned runs in 133.2 innings for a 3.97 ERA. He earned All-Pac-10 honors following the season, and was the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week three times. During the 2007 season, he tossed seven complete games. A year earlier, he posted a 6-7 record with a 4.52 ERA as a junior. Brummett transferred to UCLA from Central Arizona CC. He was previously drafted twice - in the 38th round of the 2004 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants and in the 35th round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Giants.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: What a difference a night makes. On Monday evening, the Spikes were limited to only one run on three hits en route to their seventh straight victory. A day later, the Spikes bats made up for lost time, scoring nine runs on 14 hits to push their win streak to eight. It was a total team effort on Tuesday, as all nine starters collected at least one base hit and seven different Spikes drove in a run. Brian Tracy (2-0) got the win after tossing four strong innings of relief, allowing only one run on two hits.
BRANDON ON THE SPOT: RHP Brandon Williams will unexpectedly make Spikes history this evening when he suits up for the Altoona Curve. Williams was promoted earlier this morning and is expected to pitch in relief tonight when the Curve take on the Trenton Thunder. The 29th round selection in the 2006 MLB, Williams will stay with the team for the next three days to help the ailing Curve bullpen. RHP Michael Crotta was called up from Hickory and will make the start in front of a sell-out crowd in Trenton. The Thunder have the best record in the Eastern League at 51-31.
TEARING IT UP FOR THE 'CUTTERS: 2B Tyler Mach has been the hottest player in the New York-Penn League since signing with the Phillies over a week ago. Mach, the Phillies' 4th round selection out of Oklahoma State University, is hitting a whopping .536 in his first seven games in the league. The former OK State Cowboy, has 15 hits in 28 at-bats, with ten of his hits coming in the extra-base variety. He also has 16 RBI in only seven games, which ranks him second in the NYPL.
THERE'S ONLY ONE "E" IN STREAK - Over the last six games, the Spikes have committed only one error - a throwing error by C Nick Stillwagon on June 30th. As a team, the Spikes lead the NYPL with a .978 fielding percentage. Individually, 1B Justin Byler is second among second baseman with a .991percentage, 2B Matt Cavagnaro leads his position, fielding at a 1.000 percentage.
TRACES OF BRILLIANCE: RHP Brian Tracy had a streak of 23 straight batters retired, dating back to June 22nd, snapped last evening. Tracy had pitched three perfect innings last night, and three perfect innings on June 27th before he allowed a double with two-outs in the top of the seventh.
CAVY COME LATELY: 2B Matt Cavagnaro is currently in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak. In those games, the former Penn Stater is hitting .383 (18-for-47) with four runs scored. The longest streak in franchise history is currently held by 3B Allen Craig who hit in 14 straight game from July 14 - July 31.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: Should the Spikes get on the board first tonight, it would be a good omen. State College is 6-1 when scoring first. The bullpen for State College has also done a fantastic job holding down leads, as the Spikes are 8-0 when leading after seven innings.
SHUT 'EM DOWN OPEN UP SHOP: The two-headed closer tandem for the Spikes has been outstanding in 2007. Ron Uviedo and Adam Simon are a combined 5-for-5 in save opportunities this year. Uviedo has three saves, Simon has two. The Spikes are also 7-1 when they score last in the game.
IRON MA-TT: IF Matt Cavagnaro leads the Spikes in games played, having appeared in 14 of the team's 15 games. During his senior year, Cavagnaro played in all 56 PSU games and he appeared in 54 of 56 games during his junior season.
