Spikes Fall in the Tenth

State College Spikes News Release

The Aberdeen Ironbirds (17-18) came in to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park and took two out of three from the Spikes, with both Aberdeen victories coming in extra frames, as Thursday night the Spikes fell in ten innings 3-1.

The game featured the best pitching performance of the year from Nicolas Suero, who will walk away with a no-decision. Suero pitched 8.0 innings, tying the longest outing for a pitcher in franchise history. Matt Lane and Kyle Sadlowski each pitched 8.0 innings during the 2006 campaign. Over the course of the night, Suero scattered four hits, and struck out two. He issued his first walk of the year, after going 35.2 innings without issuing a base on balls.

The only blemish on Suero's record was a solo home run hit by Joe Nowicki in the top of the fourth inning to give Aberdeen a 1-0 lead.

That lead looked as if it would be good enough, because Suero's mound opponent,Zach Jevne was equally as good, matching Suero pitch-for-pitch. Jevne pitched 8.0 innings as well, giving up just two hits, one of which was Marcus Davis' team-leading fifth long ball of the year which tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

With the game in the hands of the bullpens, Taylor Cameron (2-2) pitched a scoreless ninth frame, while Joe Esposito (4-2) matched zeros in the Spikes' ninth frame, forcing the contest into extra innings.

After Cameron walked Joe Mahoney to lead off the tenth inning, Jedidiah Stephen tried bunting him to second base, but Cameron threw out the lead runner negating the sacrifice.

Manager Turner Ward, decided to bring Ron Uviedo to close out the top of the tenth. After striking out Joe Nowicki, Ryan Adams hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give Aberdeen a 3-1 lead.

The Spikes (17-18) went 1-2-3 in the top of the tenth.

State College will open a three game series against the first place Auburn Doubledays starting tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Pirates' 2007 second round draft pick Duke Welker (1-1) will make his fourth professional start.
