State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- The State College Spikes announced their year-end award winners on Sunday in a ceremony prior to the season finale against the Williamsport Crosscutters. Outfielder Adalberto Santos was named the Spikes Most Valuable Player, with right-hander Kevin Decker picking up the Spikes Pitcher of the Year Award. Outfielder Cole White and infielder Chase Lyles shared the Spikes Leadership Award, presented by the Spikes Booster Club.
Santos, one of three Spikes selected to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, led the team in hitting (.321), runs batted in (35), runs scored (45), doubles (15), triples (7) and stolen bases (17) while contributing three home runs. The New York City native also earned NYPL Player of the Week honors for the week of August 23-29, 2010, and will become the first State College player to end the season among the league's top ten in batting average since Keanon Simon and Justin Byler each accomplished the feat in 2007.
Santos joins Brock Holt (2009), Chase d'Arnaud (2008) and Justin Byler (2007) as winners of the Spikes Most Valuable Player award.
Decker went 7-1 with a 4.02 ERA in 14 appearances in 2010. The Washington, IN native was tied for fifth in the league in wins on the heels on an undefeated season at the College of Charleston. Decker also earned NYPL Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of July 5-11 this year. The right-hander joins Kyle McPherson (2009), Alan Knotts (2008) and Tony Watson (2007) as winners of the Spikes Pitcher of the Year award.
White rejoined the Spikes at the beginning of this season after being called away from the team in the middle of 2008 to serve a two-year active duty commitment in the United States Army, and picked up right where he left off. The Midland, TX carried an average of .250 into the game with three home runs and 18 runs batted in, and filled in as first base coach when needed throughout the year.
Lyles hit .241 with six home runs and 33 runs batted in this season, and hit .350 with runners in scoring position. The Plain Dealing, LA native was also the first Spike with a multi-hit game in 2010, and ended the year with a total of 12 such performances. Lyles spent a majority of the year at third base, but also filled in at shortstop for one game. White and Lyles join David Rubinstein (2009) as recipients of the Leadership Award.
