IronBirds Win; Push the Tigers Into Second Place

ABERDEEN, MD- The Aberdeen IronBirds (33-40) scored two runs in the first inning en route to a 3-1 win over the Connecticut Tigers (38-36) before 6,629 fans at Ripken Stadium on Saturday night. With the Connecticut loss and win by the Tri-City ValleyCats in Brooklyn, the Tigers fall into second place in the NYPL Stedler Division. They are one-half game behind the ValleyCats for the final playoff spot in the New York-Penn League with one game left to play.

The IronBirds scored their two runs against Connecticut RHP Brennan Smith (1-7). 2B Mychal Givens (1-3) led off the inning with a solo home run and RF Blair Dunlap (0-2) walked. He went to third base on a single by DH Manny Machado (2-3) and scored on a sacrifice fly by LF Kipp Schutz (1-4) to make it 2-0.

Aberdeen scored a single run in the sixth inning to make it 3-0. 1B Adam Gaylord (1-4) singled and moved to third base on a single by 3B Connor Narron (1-4). A sacrifice fly by CF Jeremy Nowak (0-2) scored Gaylord.

The Tigers took advantage of a big error in the seventh inning to get on the scoreboard. C Julio Rodriguez (1-3) singled and moved to second base on a throwing error by Aberdeen RHP Steven Mazur. A single by 1B Matt Perry (1-4) moved Rodriguez to third base. He scored when RF Chao-Ting Tang (0-3) reached base on a throwing error by Aberdeen 3B Connor Narron.

The Tigers and IronBirds finish their three-game series and regular season on Sunday afternoon at 2:35 p.m. RHP Clemente Mendoza (6-5, 4.26) gets the start for Connecticut Tigers against a yet-to-be announced starter for the Aberdeen IronBirds. The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The team plays a 76-game schedule from mid-June through early September in the New York-Penn League, the oldest continually operating Class A League in all of Minor League Baseball.
