SPHL Names Ice Flyer as 'Rookie of the Year'

Pensacola, FL- The Southern Professional Hockey League announced this morning that Pensacola's star Left Wing, Chris Wilson, was named Rookie of the Year.

Chris, or Willy as he is often called, hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. The 5'9", 170 pound lefty shooting Winger has had a break out year with the Ice Flyers. In his 56 games played, he has racked up a league leading 39 goals and second best in the league 71 points.

Head Coach Todd Gordon can't talk about Willy without mentioning his work ethic. "He gives it his all whenever he comes to the rink. This is a tremendous accomplishment for him and, as an organization, we certainly could not be happier for him. We look for a long and bright future in Willy wearing Ice Flyer blue and gold."

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Southern Professional Hockey League on Wednesday announced that Chris Wilson of the Pensacola Ice Flyers has been selected as the SBK Rookie of the Year in a vote of SPHL coaches and media representatives.

Augusta RiverHawks forward Neil Graham finished second in the voting.

Wilson led the SPHL in goals (39), game-winning goals (8) and shorthanded goals (4 - tied), while his 71 points was second overall. A native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Wilson also ranked second among rookies with 32 assists and eight power-play goals.

The SPHL will announce its Coach of the Year on Thursday.

Wilson will look to extend the post-season for the Ice Flyers a little longer when leads the team in first round action against the Augusta RiverHawks. Games one and three (if necessary) will be on the road in Augusta, while game two will be played at the Pensacola Civic Center at 7:05pm on Saturday, April 2nd.
