Spence's Three-Point Night Gives Erie Point in OT Loss
November 29, 2023 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - The road never gets easier in the Ontario Hockey League, and for the Erie Otters they would be looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Mississauga Steelhead. In the final game of November, Erie would host the OHL's top team - the Kitchener Rangers - who downed Erie 10-3 just eight days ago. With vengeance and a strong finish to a solid month on the mind of the Otters, they would look to play spoiler in a midweek Midwest battle.
An even-keel first period of play would favor the Erie Otters for a long stretch, as the Otters would kill off both penalties taken in the frame. An 11-9 shot advantage for Kitchener would ultimately be for naught for either side, as the Otters would hold Kitchener scoreless through 20.
The proverbial cap would come off from the scoring side, as the teams would arrive at six total goals in the middle frame. Trent Swick (11) and the Rangers would strike shorthanded just 5:00 into the new period. Erie would respond just over 2:51 later, as Carey Terrance (17) would pick up his first goal of the night. In the ensuing four minutes, Kitchener would grab a pair of goals from Antonino Pugliese (10) and Filip Mesar (11, PPG) to jump to a 3-1 lead past the game's halfway mark. Erie would strike for back-to-back goals in the final seven minutes of the period by Pano Fimis (7) and Carey Terrance (18) on his second of the night. Erie would show resiliency in forcing a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes of play, despite being outshot 30-27.
The Otters would continue to play tough in the final frame, hoping to steal a big win from the Rangers to close out the month of November. They would get a step closer in the final 4:59 as Malcolm Spence (4) would give Erie its first lead of the night. Unfortunately for the Otters, Matthew Sop (16) would knot things up 4-4 with 2:10 to go. As the game would transition to overtime, it would be opportunities on either side, but Matthew Sop (17) would put the game on ice with his second-straight goal to down the Otters. Erie would earn a point in the overtime loss, and their second point against the Rangers this season.
The month of November closes, and thus begins the final month of 2023. Erie will make its final trip to Owen Sound on Saturday and Sunday, looking to pick up some key Midwest Division wins heading into the 30 percent mark of the season.
