Special Teams Lead the Way in Knights' Win

Two power play goals and a shorthanded tally helped lead the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights to a 4-1 win over the Northeast Generals Thursday afternoon at Revolution Ice Centre.

Wilkes-Barre capitalized on a big penalty dealt to the Generals in the middle Frame, but also killed off six penalties against their East Division rival to lock up two points, improving their record to 4-4-1.

After a scoreless first, Northeast's Alberto Pison was assessed a five-minute major 4:45 into the second when the forward crunched Shay Donovan against the glass at center ice with an illegal check to the head. Donovan left to the locker room, but did return.

With a five minute man advantage, Gabe Temple struck just eight seconds into the attack, pouncing on a wrist shot in-between the circles to beat Generals' goalie Marko Sturma.

Less than two minutes later on the continuous power play, Jordan Strand took a center point shot with traffic in front. Jeffrey Bertrand was there and able to re-direct the puck into the net for a 2-0 Knights' lead.

The Generals countered just over a minute after the major penalty expired with a tic-tac-toe passing play between Connor Marshall, Brady Gaudette, and Trevor Smith, who finished the play by beating a sprawling Zach Stejskal at the side of the net to cut the lead in half.

Northeast had numerous man advantages to try and tie the game afterwards, but a combination of solid penalty killers and the goalie Stejskal, who made 41 saves, were able to keep the Generals at bay. The visitors had three power plays in the third, as well as a six on five with an empty net.

What felt like a "game ending goal" came up in the latter stages of the third. The Generals had just began their sixth power play, but a costly turnover at the attacking blue line led to Adrian Danchenko stealing, then scoring on a top shelf shorthanded marker. Gabe Temple would throw home the empty net goal for his second of the game to officially seal the deal.

Up next, the teams meet again Friday night to continue their weekend series. The five game home stand continues with a 7pm puck drop, where the Knights look to make it back-to-back wins en route to a sweep with Saturday afternoon still looming.
