Steve Ludzik came to Niagara Falls a teenaged hockey prospect, and never left. The former Chicago Blackhawk and head coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning has written his first book, gathering several colourful tales from a career on and off the ice.
The book, titled "BEEN THERE DONE THAT", details his exploits on and off the ice.
Been There Done That shares it all.
Steve Ludzik describes how his battle with colitis and Crohn's disease nearly ended his hockey career before it even got started.
From there he became a hockey hero in Niagara Falls.
Ludzik devotes several chapters of the book to his OHL days -the fights, the hi jinx, the night he was, uh, nearly arrested for whacking the mascot in Sudbury (Ludzik wasn't in the mood to be taunted in the penalty box). He relishes these stories before the bright lights of the NHL.
Even his illness made for some amusing tales.
"In training camp we were between ice sessions, and we were downtown eating at an Italian restaurant," recalls Flyer teammate Larmer. "He got up to go to the washroom and I think I put half a jar of those red hot chili peppers into his pasta and I mixed it all around."
The end result?
"Well, I never did it again."
Ludzik moved on to have a great career with The Chicago Blackhawks and coached The Tampa Bay Lightning for 2 seasons before returning to his hockey roots right here in Niagara Falls.
