Great Falls Voyagers News Release

Missoula, MT Tonight the Great Falls White Sox defeated the Missoula Osprey 8-3 at Play Ball Park in Missoula. Jay Marshall (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he worked three perfect innings striking out four batters. The loss went to Vince Bongiovanni (0-2) as he worked an inning and two-thirds, allowing one unearned run.

Great Falls scored first on a sacrifice fly by Francisco Hernandez in the first inning and an RBI groundout by Evan Tartaglia in the second. Missoula would get on the board in the second on an RBI groundout by JoJo Batten before tying the game in the third on a single by Rusty Ryal scoring Travis Tully.

The Sox came back to take the lead in the fourth when Hernandez singled home Tartaglia, but in the sixth, the Osprey scored on a double by Osvaldo Diaz, bringing home Ryal to tie the game at 3-3.

For the third time in the game the Sox would take the lead. The next time was in the seventh inning when Javier Castillo singled, stole second base, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch.

Manager John Orton was ejected in the seventh arguing a play at second base. Brandon Johnson entered as a pinch runner and on a groundball he attempted a take-out slide at second to break up a double play. The slide was a success, however base umpire Aaron Stewart called runners interference for being to far from the base, therefore the batter was out as well.

In the ninth inning, the Sox extended the lead on a pair of homeruns. First, Manny Rodriguez hit one out to left for a solo shot. Later in the inning Mike Landry hit one opposite field to left for a three-run homerun. Both batters came into that at bat with three strikeouts on the night.

In the ball game, Great Falls was 10 for 10 in stolen base attempts, setting a new team high for 2005 and coming up just two shy of the Pioneer League record set in 1986. Evan Tartaglia led the way with 4, followed by Javier Castillo with two, Daron Roberts with two, Garrett Guest with one and Mike Landry with one.

Tomorrow night the Sox will play the second of this three game set with the Missoula Osprey. The starters for the game are: Yunior Novoa (LHP) for Great Falls and Greg Smith (LHP) for Missoula. Game time is at 7:00pm and can be heard on 560AM-KMON starting at 6:45.
