Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox handled the Tacoma Rainiers from start to finish Monday night winning by a score of 5-1 in front of 1,227 fans at Security Service Field on a cold blistery night.

The Sox started things off with a bang when Eric Young Jr. lead off the game with a deep bomb giving him his first home run of the season. Two batters later first baseman Dan Ortmeier followed suit smacking a dinger himself giving the Sox an early 2-0 lead.

Jason Hirsh (3-1) had his best performance of the season, mesmerizing the Tacoma players from the mound finishing the game with a total of nine strikeouts, the most in a single game for the right-hander since June 24, 2006 when struck out 12 for Round Rock, over seven innings of work. Hirsh didn't allow a run until the sixth coming by way of an RBI groundout by second baseman Callix Crabbe that brought home center fielder Freddy Guzman. Crabbe's RBI would prove to be the only run the Rainiers would come away with on the evening.

The Sky Sox put on a display of power with three of their runs coming by way of solo homers, Young and Ortmeier's in the first, and another by Matt Murton in the third extending his hitting-streak to thirteen games and giving the Sox a 3-1 lead. Murton would add another RBI in the fifth, singling in Eric Young Jr., followed by Ortmeier who had an RBI single of his own which gave the Sky Sox a commanding 5-1 lead that would prove to be the final score. All five of the Sky Sox runs were given up by Tacoma starting pitcher Chris Seddon (1-2) who was replaced in the sixth inning.

Joel Peralta tossed a scoreless eighth followed by Randy Flores who finished out the game with a perfect ninth.

The final game of the series will be on Tuesday at 6:05 PM and will feature Sky Sox right-hander Brandon Hynick (1-1, 6.23 ERA) versus right-hander Andy Baldwin (1-1, 1.72 ERA).
