Padres Purchase Contract of Chad Gaudin

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of Portland right-handed pitcher Chad Gaudin (GO-dan) and designated right-handed pitcher Eulogio De La Cruz for assignment.

Gaudin, 26, was signed by the Padres to a minor league contract April 12 after he was released by the Chicago Cubs. The right-hander was assigned to Portland, where he has made two starts, tossing 8.2 scoreless innings without factoring in a decision. Gaudin has allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out 10 with the Beavers.

Originally signed by Tampa Bay as a 34th-round selection in the 2001 draft, Gaudin has gone 28-25 with a 4.45 ERA (22er, 449.0ip) and 326 strikeouts in 185 games (50 starts) over parts of six major league seasons with the Devil Rays (2003-04), Toronto Blue Jays (2005), Oakland Athletics (2006-08) and Cubs (2008).

De La Cruz, 25, made three relief appearances for the Padres this season, allowing two runs over 3.1 innings of work. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers on Sept. 6, 2001, De La Cruz has no decisions and an 11.84 ERA (25er, 19.0ip) with 11 strikeouts in 15 games (1 start) over parts of three major league seasons with the Tigers (2007), Florida Marlins (2008) and Padres (2009).

With today's move, the Beavers' active roster is now at 23 players.
