Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. -- A day after suffering a no-hit loss at home, the Pawtucket Red Sox struck early and often in the opener of their eight-day road trip en route to a 5-1 victory Monday over the Gwinnett Braves.
Coming off a 2-1 defeat in which four Durham pitchers combined to record the first no-hitter by a visitor at McCoy Stadium, the PawSox didn't arrive in the Atlanta area until mid-afternoon. Yet, despite eschewing regular on-field batting practice, they collected 10 hits in handing Gwinnett its ninth straight loss.
Their first two hits immediately put them on top of right-hander Omar Poveda, who entered with a 1.93 ERA and .136 opponents' batting average. Ryan Lavarnway singled and Mark Hamilton laced an opposite field drive to straight-away left for his third home run and a 2-0, first-inning lead.
Pawtucket reached Poveda (L, 2-2) again when Brock Holt lined an RBI single in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead. It was the first of Holt's two singles, as one of the two PawSox, along with Lavarnway, to produce multiple hits.
Meanwhile, Rubby De La Rosa turned in his third consecutive scoreless outing, while settling for a no-decision. De La Rosa, who struck out a season-high six, retired his final seven hitters.
The win was credited to Chris Hernandez (W, 1-2), who recently moved into the PawSox bullpen. Hernandez worked 4.0-plus innings, surrendering only a solo home run by Jordan Parraz in the fifth inning.
Pawtucket pushed across two more runs in its half of the seventh, thanks to Lavarnway's RBI single and a wild pitch to score Holt.
Anthony Carter, who hails from nearby Lilburn, Ga., marked his homecoming by striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning.
The Sox and G-Braves continue their four-game series Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. Alfredo Aceves (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for Pawtucket against lefty Daniel Rodriguez (1-2, 7.48).
