Bristol White Sox News Release

Bristol, VA - The Bristol White Sox lost the first game of their doubleheader here with the Johnson City Cardinals tonight, 2-1.

The Cards took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when the first two batters reached, C.J. McElroy on a double to left field and Ildemaro Vargas on an infield single which knocked the glove off Sox hurler Jake Cose's hand. A passed ball moved both runners up a base, and McElroy scored on Jeremy Schaffer's sacrifice fly.

Cose retired the next 11 batters he faced, as Bristol knotted the game up in the bottom of the fourth with an Eric Grabe double to left, followed by a single by Juan Ramirez which plated Grabe.

Cose pitched well, allowing just five hits in 6.1 innings, while walking two and striking out five, but was saddled with the loss to drop to 0-3 on the year when McElroy scored again in the sixth on another sacrifice fly by Schaffer.

Nicholas Gillung picked up the win for Johnson City, his first of the season, and Ronald Shaban pitched the final inning of the seven-inning match for his sixth save of the year.

Courtney Hawkins, Nick Basto and Grabe each collected two hits for the Sox, who fell to 6-16. Johnson City improved to 11-11.

The second game was suspended with the score tied 3-3 with the Sox waiting to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning. That game will likely be completed when the Sox travel to Johnson City in late August.

The Sox continue their home stand Saturday evening when the Greeneville Astros visit Boyce Cox Field to begin a three-game series. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm, with the gates opening at 6:00 pm as the Sox celebrate Bristol Regional Medical Night.
