Southern Maryland loses out to Lancaster

WALDORF, Md. - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs packed their bags and traveled to Lancaster for their final road series of the 2013 Atlantic League Regular Season. After stealing the final game of their series against the Long Island Ducks, the Blue Crabs called upon left-handed pitcher Logan Williamson to keep their momentum rolling in the right direction with the playoffs on the horizon. The Barnstormers countered with a lefty of their own in Nate Reed in hopes of taking the first game of the series. The Blue Crabs offense for five runs early but they are unable to hold on as Lancaster stormed back six runs in the second to earn the 12-5 victory.

As they have for much of the second half, the Crabs offense has made a habit of getting on the board early in games this season. They did just that Friday, as they drew first blood when CF Jeremy Owens doubled to lead off the game came around to score on an RBI single by SS Renny Osuna. The Crabs attack exploded for more runs in the top-half of the second as they tallied four runs on four hits to take a 5-0 lead. The inning was highlighted when Crabs newest addition, LF Donnie Webb, hit a bases clearing 3-run double.

The Barnstormers had a rally of their own in them as they stormed back for six runs in the home-half of the second inning on five hits highlighted by SS Joe Thurston's 2-RBI double. The "˜Stormers didn't look back once they had the lead as they tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth as second basemen, Anthony Contreras connect for a solo homerun. Another big inning would follow late as the Barnstormers' offense struck for five runs in the bottom of the eighth with Thurston providing most of the damage again with a three-run homer. The Crabs offense wouldn't be able to rally after the big innings and Barnstormers held on to the 12-5 victory.

UP NEXT - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will continue their series when they take on the Lancaster Barnstormers in the second installment of their three-game series, Saturday night in Lancaster.
