Southern League Announces Home Run Derby Participants

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs are excited to announce the six participating players in the 2018 Southern League Home Run Derby which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 19 at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
The competition is slated to begin at 5:00 pm local time, prior to that night's Southern League All-Star Game, and gates for the Home Run Derby are scheduled to open a half hour prior at 4:30 pm. All-Star Game tickets give fans access to the Southern League Home Run Derby at no additional cost.
Representing the Birmingham Barons as well as the North Division will be catcher Zack Collins, who has nine home runs this season, including four this past month. He is joined by a pair of Jackson Generals sluggers, Rudy Flores and Jamie Westbrook. Flores has recorded 37 total home runs across four seasons and 294 career Southern League games. He currently leads all North Division first baseman with 10 this year. Westbrook leads all Generals hitters with 11 home runs, currently pacing the league's top offense.
Sitting atop the South Division squad is Biloxi Shuckers first baseman Jake Gatewood, who paces all Southern League players with 13 homers this year. He is joined by Pensacola outfielder Aristides Aquino, whose eight home runs lead all Blue Wahoos batters, and Tyler Marlette, whose six shots are tied for the most among all Mississippi Braves sluggers.
All six participants will compete in the first round, hitting as many home runs as possible until they record seven outs. The final round between the top two batters will be either five or 10 outs, depending on time.
Home Run Derby and All-Star Game participants remain subject to change.
