South Bend Edges Bowling Green 4-3 to Even Series

Bowling Green, KY: In game two of a three game set down in Kentucky, the South Bend Cubs narrowly snuck past the Bowling Green Hot Rods in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon. By a final of 4-3, the Cubs were able to tie the series up heading into a deciding rubber match tomorrow afternoon.

After being shutout last night, the Cubs offense came out firing on Sunday with the game's first three runs. Newcomer Jose Gutierrez impressed in his South Bend debut with a 1/4 day, a home run, and two RBI. Gutierrez was assigned to South Bend after most recently playing with Advanced-A Myrtle Beach.

After five innings, it was a 3-0 South Bend lead. But the Hot Rods quickly had an answer.

Bowling Green, who possesses the best overall record in the Midwest League, is lead by a power packed offensive lineup that won them the first half of the season. In the bottom of the 7th, they scored three runs off right hander Luis Aquino. Aquino, who returned from the disabled list today, took all the damage as earned runs.

Bowling Green opening day roster members Emilio Gustave and Taylor Walls headed the Hot Rods offense on Sunday with the three RBI combined between the two of them.

After the 7th, the Hot Rods bats went cold. They threatened to walk-off in the bottom of the 9th inning with the winning run on base, but Brian Glowicki shut things down to force extras.

In the top of the 10th inning, Clayton Daniel began the frame automatically at second base. He was pushed to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Christian Donahue. With just one out, the Cubs did not need any offensive help to get the run in. Daniel sprinted home on a wild pitch by right hander Tyler Day. It was a 4-3 South Bend lead heading to the bottom half of the 10th.

Glowicki tossed a scoreless 10th to win the game for the Cubs. His record now stands at 3-5 with a 1.34 ERA. Day takes the loss and drops to 0-3.

Now with an overall record of 53-59, the Cubs will play another matinee tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match of the series. First pitch from Bowling Green Ballpark on Monday is set for 1:05 PM.
