Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Sounds used a four-run sixth inning and an outstanding spot start from Justin Reid to win their second straight game against the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds, posting a 5-1 victory on Tuesday evening to vault past their division foes into second place in the PCL East.
With the victory, Nashville (13-12) posted its first winning record of the 2004 campaign and now trails division-leading Oklahoma by only a half-game entering play on Wednesday.
The Sounds broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning by plating four runs in the frame against Memphis starter Jason Ryan, who played for Nashville in 2001. Rightfielder Ruben Mateo led off the frame and opened the scoring by belting a mammoth homer to dead center that caromed off the top of the speaker box 24 feet above the wall 400 feet from home plate. The longball was Mateo's team-leading ninth of the season.
Chris Truby followed suit by belting Ryan's 0-1 offering onto the home run deck in right-center, his fourth roundtripper of the year, to complete the Sounds' second set of back-to-back homers in 2004. Earlier in the season, Truby followed a Carlos Rivera shot on April 13 at Albuquerque to complete the first back-to-back Nashville jacks.
Tony Alvarez â who turned in a 3-for-4, two-RBI outing that included a pair of doubles â plated the inning's final two runs when his two-out double down the left-field line brought home Luke Allen and Mike Moriarty.
Nashville increased the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the eighth. Andy Abad drew a walk from Redbirds reliever Joe Horgan to open the frame and Rich Thompson replaced him as a pinch-runner. The speedy outfielder stole second and advanced home on a J.R. House RBI single.
Memphis broke up the shutout bid in the top of the ninth, plating their lone run on a John Mabry sacrifice fly off Juan Acevedo.
Sounds reliever Hector Almonte (1-0) tossed a pair of scoreless frames to record the victory, while Ryan (1-4) was dealt the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits despite fanning eight over his 5 2/3 innings.
Reid turned in an outstanding effort, fanning eight batters over four scoreless frames, but received a no-decision in his spot start. The eight punchouts â which included striking out the side in both the first and second innings â equaled the most this season by a Nashville starter.
Rehabbing outfielder Jason Bay struck out swinging on an 0-2 pitch as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning in his second contest with the Sounds.
The Sounds and Redbirds continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon. Left-hander Sean Burnett (1-0, 3.72) takes the hill for Nashville to face Memphis right-hander Rhett Parrott (1-1, 4.35).
