EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that right-handed pitcher Rob Stanifer has been signed as a free agent. Stanifer should be available to play in Tuesday night's game in Tacoma against the Rainiers. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 23 players; 11 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and three outfielders, plus one player (infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list.
Stanifer, 32, was released in Spring Training by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and will be making his season debut with the Trappers. The native of Easley, South Carolina started the 2003 season with Triple-A Iowa, where he was 1-0, 3.86 (7 IP - 3 ER) in three games before being released by the Chicago Cubs on April 26. Stanifer was signed by the Houston Astros on May 9 and was assigned to Triple-A New Orleans where he was 3-2, 3.97 (57 IP - 25 ER) with four saves in 41 games. He began his minor league career in the Florida Marlins farm system after being selected in the 12th round of the 1994 draft. Stanifer pitched in 74 games with the Marlins at the Major League level in 1997 and 1998, combining to go 3-6, 5.13 (93 IP - 53 ER) with two saves. He also spent eight games with the Boston Red Sox in 2000 posting a 0-0 record and a 7.62 ERA (13 IP - 11 ER). In 2002 Stanifer was 0-0, 4.74 (19.0 IP - 10 ER) in 15 appearances with Hiroshima in the Japanese Central League. He entered the 2004 season with a career minor league record of 39-31. Stanifer has posted a 3.64 ERA (561.2 IP - 227 ER) and 41 saves in 306 minor league appearances (27 starts).
The next Trapper home game will be on Thursday, May 11 when the club will take on the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
