Seattle (Tuesday, August 7, 2007)- The Colorado Rapids fell to the Seattle Sounders 5-0 tonight in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
In the fourth minute, Conor Casey controlled the ball at the top of the Seattle penalty area with time to shot before he attempted to slot a pass to an onrushing Colin Clark but it was just too far for the Fort Collins native.
The Sounders cleared a ball off the line in the 20th minute. Casey headed a Jose Cancela cross to the far post but former Rapids player Danny Jackson recovered to save the goal.
The Rapids went down 1-0 in the 23rd minute. Josh Gardner swung in a corner kick that was knocked over the line by Taylor Graham at the back post.
In the 25th minute Seattle scored again when Zach Scott headed in a quickly taken free kick from Leighton O'Brien.
Seattle went up 3-0 on an Ugo Ihemelu own goal. Zach Thornton made an excellent save on Roger Levesque but the shot caromed in off the Rapids defender.
Herculez Gomez found himself on the back post with the ball in the 45th minute but goalkeeper Chris Eylander made a tough save to keep Seattle's advantage.
Thornton thwarted Scott in the 54th minute. The former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year made a reflex save, his finest of the night.
In the 56th minute Thornton got a piece, but not enough, of a Gardner shot that went in the net for the fourth Sounders goal.
A breakaway goal by Sebastien Le Toux made the difference five in the 68th minute.
