Strong Island Sound News Release

Selden, N.Y.- The Strong Island Sound won their third straight contest to complete a four game home stand, and maintain first place in the Blue Central division with a 7-3 record on the season. The Cape Cod Frenzy came into Suffolk Community College on Saturday evening for the second time this year and left without a victory. Strong Island played a sound team game and came away with a 110-97 win.

Greg Plummer came into the contest shooting over 49 percent from three-point territory. He began lighting the scoreboard up early and hit four shots from downtown in the first quarter. The Sound controlled the tempo of the game and led 30-25 after one.

The Frenzy heated up in the second quarter and were able to take a 33-32 lead in the first three minutes. Once again, Plummer (31 points, 60 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point territory) became the go-to guy for the Sound. Another three-pointer and a tip-in following a miss by Jerome "Fridge" Holman gave Strong Island a seven-point advantage at the two minute mark. Dustin Hellenga (8 points, 4 assists, 5 steals) showed some frustration on the Frenzy's part and was hit with a technical foul. Holman converted the two-free throws to put the Sound up by a score of 48-36 with 40.8 seconds left in the second quarter. Cape Cod went on a 5-0 run to close out the half trailing by only seven points. An amazing two quarters by Plummer, who had 23 points by that time and going 5 for 8 from 3-point land.

The Sound upped their lead in the third quarter, which was highlighted by more long range bullets from Plummer, a hard rejection on Sly McIntosh (17 points) by Holman (one of his two blocks in the game to go along with his 20 points), and three shots from downtown by Sean Dantzler, who had 12 points on the night. The Sound went into the last 12 minutes with an 80-67 advantage.

Raphael Edwards played another strong game in only his second stint of action on the season after being re-signed. On one sequence at the 6:45 mark of the fourth quarter, he went inside for a shot that missed, went up to grab the rebound and put it back for two of his 15 points. The "Fridge" began heating up at that point. Holman had a number of plays that raised a few eyebrows in the crowd. In addition to his own 'shake and bake' move for two, he fed Darren "DP" Phillip (14 points) down low for two, and later set up Tommie "Gunzz" Eddie on a no-look pass for a slam to put Strong Island up 97-86 with 3:30 left in the game.

The Frenzy had one last legitimate shot to close the gap with just over two minutes remaining. The Sound turned the ball over in the back-court and with the 3-D rule in effect, Hellenga missed a three-pointer that would have made it a five-point game. Phillip grabbed the rebound and on the ensuing possession, Eddie was fouled and hit one of two from the line, extending the Sound's lead to 100-90 with 1:40 left. Strong Island played keep-away to use up as much clock as possible on each possession and earned a good 110-97 win.

"Our game plan was to get a good shot off on every possession instead of turning the ball over," stated Plummer following the game. "We concentrated on a good start, coming out of the gate strong to set the tone for the entire game."

Plummer continued when asked about the upcoming five-game road trip with the team playing well, "We're nowhere near our peak. We still make little mistakes, but we're getting better everyday. When we hit our peak, we'll be a real scary team."

Sean Dantzler followed up by saying, "These home wins were important. We have a lot of confidence going on the road."

The Sound make the short trip to Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn on Saturday December 9th to take on the 2-2 Wonders. The next afternoon, the 4-5 Maryland Nighthawks will host the Sound in a late afternoon matinee.

In their next home game, the Sound host the Brooklyn Wonders at Suffolk Community College on Friday December 22nd at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, please visit the Strong Island Sound's official team website, www.strongislandsound.com .
