Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Soul stepped back on the field for the first time in more than eight months and defeated the New York Dragons at the Wachovia Spectrum with an unofficial score of 62-26.
The Soul offense was clicking on all cylinders as quarterback Tony Graziani threw three touchdown passes in the first half and backup quarterback Juston Wood came in for the second half and threw four more. Philadelphia also had two rushing touchdowns. Wide receiver Sean Scott pummeled his way into the endzone from the 3-yard line midway threw the first half and fullback George Layne rushed for a score after three consecutive carries that totaled 25 yards. He finished the game with five carries for 40 yards.
New York entered the game without starting quarterback Aaron Garcia since he is still on the injured list from a broken tibia he suffered last season. His replacement was four-year AFL veteran Leon Murray and he was able to get the Dragons going early as they got on the board and lead 7-0 to start the game. The last lead New York had was 14-13 late in the first quarter. Philadelphia took over from there and finished the half with a 34-20 lead.
The Blue and Grey continued to dominate on both sides of the ball in the second half as they scored 28 straight points before the Dragons scored in the final minute of the game.
Philadelphia's defense recorded seven sacks including a pair from defensive linemen Ron Johnson and also John Fields. With the constant pressure put on New York's quarterbacks, they were able to force them into turning the ball over on downs five consecutive times.
On the offensive side of the ball, wide receiver Larry Brackins caught three touchdowns while receiver Steve Gonzalez reached the endzone twice.
