Soul position breakdown: fullbacks

February 12, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Philadelphia Soul News Release

Arena Football is not known for its running game, but the Philadelphia Soul were able to run the ball for a franchise record in yards last season and ranked second in the League. This season will only have one familiar face at the position, yet the mindset of head coach Bret Munsey and offensive coordinator Connell Maynor will remain the same and that is to mix up the play calls.

Last season was a breakout year for Wes Ours (6'0", 300, West Virginia) after he rushed the ball for more than 100 yards for the first time in his three year career. He became an intricate part of the offense that saw the Soul reach the postseason for the first time in franchise history. With the importance of the running game for Coach Munsey, Ours will plan on caring a bulk of the carries since Chad Dukes has moved on and Mike Brown and Raheem Orr will be focusing on the defensive side of the ball. Although, Sean Scott might still see some carries with the end-around play Coach Munsey made famous last season to Philly fans.

Known as one of the University of Wisconsin's fan favorites over the past four years, Matt Bernstein (6'0, 261, Wisconsin) enters training camp with the Soul looking to jumpstart his football career. While at Wisconsin, he had games were he turned the fullback position into an unusual site. He made a name for himself when he rushed for 300 yards with one touchdown during his senior season to be named an All-Big Ten Conference First-Team selection. Following his stay with the Badgers, Bernstein signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions before coming to Philadelphia.

Blocking for one of the best running backs in recent years (LaDanian Tomlinson) during his college days, George Layne (5'11", 250, TCU) has been known for his outstanding ability block in the backfield. The former TCU Horned Frog makes his way to the Keystone State for his first season in the AFL after playing in the NFL for four years between the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons and San Diego Chargers. During that time, he played a total of 12 games including two playoff games with the Falcons in 2002 against the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles.
