Kats' Intersquad scrimmage recap

February 12, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Nashville Kats News Release

The Nashville Kats' Intersquad scrimmage proved to be a showcase of offensive and defensive weapons, with the offense accounting for a total of nine touchdowns on 56 plays and the defense racking five sacks and two batted passes. "As a team, I am just glad they competed, went full speed and went hard. The guys looked good today but we still have work to do," said Sperduto when asked about how his team performed Saturday.

WR Alonzo Nix was the highlight of the day. The second year receiver, who is coming off a breakout rookie season with 32 catches for 518 yards and nine touchdowns in 2006, is looking to exceed his first season: quickly becoming one of the quarterbacks' favorite targets. The standout from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga finished with three touchdowns, with all being from different quarterbacks.

A surprise during the scrimmage was Matt Kohn, a 6'2' 205 quarterback who was a four-year starter at the University of Indianapolis who had a very impressive performance. His highlight during the scrimmage came when the quarterback completed a perfect five-for-five drive with a long pass to Nix, drawing raves and cheers from teammates. "The whole week I have been working up to this point, and today was just a culmination of the week," said Kohn.

Aside from the offensive side of the ball, the defense showed a bright and hopeful glimpse of the impact it will have in 2007. Led by defensive lineman Howard Hodges and Aaron McConnell, who both registered two sacks a piece, the Kats defense plans to add a defensive presence to a league known for it's high scores.

Along with Hodges and McConnell, one Kat who made an impression Saturday, was third-year FB/LB Dan Alexander, who amongst other standout plays, scored a touchdown on a draw play. Alexander, who has been seeing double duty throughout camp also accounted for a sack on defense. "I think we are really pulling together as a team and executing well, today was a lot of fun out there competing," added Alexander.

Another player coaches are counting on to make an impact on both sides of the ball in 2007 is former Vanderbilt standout WR/DB Dominique Morris. Morris was on the receiving end of a touchdown pass and made several plays on defense. "I was trying to work hard, pick up the offense the best way I can and just make a play. I really feel comfortable with the team, I've been with these coaches since last year so I've built a rapport with these guys...I just go out and do what the coaches say."
